We
enjoyed having visitors in our classroom last Tuesday! The third graders
were excellent hosts as they taught their visitors how to play a variety of
math games. In addition, everyone had fun in art drawing a
tree.
Next
week third graders will have a homework assignment to research and
share a family tradition. I look forward to learning and sharing about
family traditions. It is always interesting to learn about the diversity
of celebrations in our community. I
hope that your child enjoys working on this homework assignment.

We finished our introductory unit on multiplication. The work as well as the final assessment from the unit will be sent home in the Friday Folder. I am impressed by how fluent third graders are becoming with their multiplication facts. If your child is still working to achieve automaticity with his/her facts, please help him or her practice at home.

We started our
next unit, which has to do with multiplying two- and three-digit numbers by
one-digit numbers. We began
this unit by using place value blocks to visualize what happens when you
multiply 3 times 40 or 3 times 4 groups of 10. We also introduced and practiced the
standard algorithm for multiplication. Ask
your third grader how we used cookie baking to help us understand large
multiplication problems. They were impressed to hear about the baking that
Ellis is doing at home! There are a number of mathematical challenges available
for third graders to work on in the classroom as well as at home. Please let me know if you would like
some additional challenges for your child. We have many wonderful resources!
As our conclusion to the habitat unit and in conjunction with our informational writing, students will be researching a biome. They will work in research groups to read and become an expert about one biome. Third graders will learn about the plants and animals that live in that biome as well as the climate. They will then create an animal that could have all of its survival needs met in the biome they researched. The animal will need physical and behavioral characteristics that help it get food and protection in a specific biome. Ask your third grader what biome they would like to research.

In this unit, students have practiced writing introductions and conclusions, organized their information in different ways, practiced elaboration to include specific details about different aspects of their topic, and used domain-specific vocabulary. We will be turning our writing into a book in which third graders will be able include specific text features such as maps and diagrams to strengthen their writing. Ask your third grader about their favorite part of information writing.
