Think Spring!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a warm and restful Spring Break. I look forward to seeing you back at school in April! We enjoyed listening to book talks this week. The book
talks have been wonderful and I hope they have encouraged third graders to try
some new books. Many students have gotten genre bingo and are working towards black out. It is fun to see their excitement grow about trying new genres.
The work and final assessment from the Measurement Bar Modeling unit is being sent home in Friday Folders. I encourage you to look carefully at the work. I think you will be impressed by the complexity of word problems third graders are able to solve. We just completed a math unit about bar graphs and line plots.
When we return from break we will begin a study of fractions.
We
are finishing reading Poppy out loud, focusing on plot and setting. We are noticing how Avi builds
suspense in Poppy by having the
excitement of each event in the plot increase as the story progresses. We are also working on visualizing the
different locations the story takes place. Students worked collaboratively to create a
map of the setting of Poppy. It was fun to watch their understanding of
the book develop as they worked to draw a
map of the story including where important events took place.
We finished our study of how geography affects culture. Each
student created a three-dimensional model to demonstrate how physical
geography affects the culture of a different Native American group. Students also wrote a
paragraph that explains how the geography of the area their group lived in
affected the group’s culture. It was
amazing to see them synthesize their learning and make connections in their
writing. My favorite part of our work was when the
classroom was turned into a “museum” and third graders took turns teaching
classmates about the Native American group they had become an expert
about. It was very exciting to see the
third graders explain to one another everything they had learned. As they talked to one another, I could
literally see the under-standings of how climate affects geography come
together! All of the work from this unit is being sent home in Friday Folders with a rubric. Please take time to review all of the hard work third graders completed during this unit.
