Create a City Project
In our study of
cities, our conversations were based on these guiding questions:

What are the needs and wants of a community/city?
•
Why do people move from one community/city to another?
•
How does a community/city grow and change to meet the needs and
wants of its people?
•
How does a community’s geography – the climate, natural resources,
and physical features- affect the way its
people live and work?
For this project,
you will plan and build a model of your own city. Together, we developed a list of things that
help a city meet the needs and wants of the people who live there. As you plan your city, be sure to consider your
own family’s experience and also what you learned from our study, to help you
decide what you will include from the list below. Be sure to plan your city according to the
geography, climate, and natural resources where it is located.
Housing:
Every city needs
residential areas. You will need to decide what kind of housing your city will
provide for its people.
Transportation:
It is important to
know how people and things will be transported in your city and what systems
you will provide in order for that to happen.
Water:
Every city needs a
water source. Where will your city get
its water supply?
Energy:
A source of energy
for power will be important for your city.
Tourist Attraction:
What makes your
city special? Include at least one place
of interest that a tourist would not want to miss!
Other:
There are many
other things that draw people to a city and make them want to live there. What
else will you include from the list that we developed together in class?

Create a City Project
Brochure:
You will be
creating a brochure that describes your city and explains how it meets the
needs and wants of its people. You may use the folded paper provided with the
project materials, or you may design your own. Be creative! The detail and
description in your writing, maps, illustrations or photos should clearly
communicate what you have learned about cities and how you have connected those
understandings to your specific city. Be
sure to include information about the geography - climate, natural resources
and physical features. Your brochure should persuade people to come and live in
your city!
Project Materials:
You must build
your city on the piece of foam board that is provided. You may use any other supplies you choose to
build the things that will go into your city.
